Credit cards are a big step for college students. It is one of the most responsible things they can have when going to college. It is not just a card to buy whatever you like. Parents need to discuss with their children what a credit card is and how using it properly can affect their credit history. If they use it improperly, then there are consequences. It would not be a good idea to start their financial history with bad credit, and this is something they need to be aware of.

There are a few banks that offer credit cards just for Australian students. Commonwealth Bank has a student card with zero dollars annual fee as long as they are in college. Credit lines start at $400 and is made just for students. ANZ Access Advantage is an Australian and New Zealand card offered to students or international students studying in Australia. Student Edge Debit Card from BankWest is a good deal. This bank debit card allows for student to have easy access to their money. There are no monthly fees and no limit to how much you deposit. American Express has an AMSA Student Gold Credit Card that has no annual fee and a 55 day interest-free limit. American Express offers many incentives and membership points.

There are other banks who also offer student credit cards. It is important to review all of their fees and options. Read the fine print to make sure there are not any hidden fees. Most banks will approve students for these credit cards to get them started in building credit. If the student is responsible for paying the bill, they will understand what it means to have financial responsibility and can build good credit. If the parents are paying the bill, they need to have an open line of communication on what should and should not be bought with the credit card.

Student credit cards should be used for emergencies or for buying necessary materials for school. These cards have specific programs with great advantages. Parents and children should decide on the card that is right for them. Some cards allow for parents to be contacted when purchases are made. This is good, especially if they are paying the bill. While a student credit card may cause family tension, it should not. As long as there is communication, there should be no problems.

Why students should practice good credit card responsibility

Student credit card | College credit card

Credit cards for people with bad credit | Credit cards for consumers with unfavorable credit

To a young adult, the meaning of “credit” may not be completely understood just yet. To them, a credit card equals to free money, and who can say no when you are being handed $2000 in a plastic card? They will happily go on spending sprees for months on end before they either go over-limit with their cards or trip over their credit card bills which are by now, piling up high in the mail boxes.

Students who run up huge credit card debts using their student credit card or college credit card will soon experience financial problems not long after they graduate. While it’s not so bad during the first year or two, things may start to go seriously wrong as they feel the need to settle down with a life partner. With a bad credit background they will find it difficult to purchase a house or a car, or even to take up a personal loan. This will result in a barrage of troubles that will threaten to mar the peace within a family.

That being said, credit cards are not all about gloom and doom. Solutions are abound for those who wish to make amends. Students may want to approach their parents and relate to them their difficulties concerning paying their credit card bills. They can also take the initiative to gather information about credit card debt consolidation to lump all their debts into a single debt thus getting multiple creditors off their backs. And like they said, prevention is better than cure so instead of a credit card, you may want to issue a debit card for your teenagers.

Without proper responsibility, students may soon need credit cards for people with bad credit or credit cards for consumers with unfavorable credit when they grow older.

Student credit cards are the credit cards that have been specially designed for uni students. Student credit cards are becoming more and more increasingly popular as the generation Y uni students are finding it harder to find part time work that conforms to their need for money and for study. Student credit cards allow the students to experience the benefits of credit cards much earlier in their life to take on the responsibility of credit spending and finance budgeting. Through student credit cards, the uni students are able to learn more about credit cards and their use. In fact, for most, the student credit card is their first credit card that acts as a gateway to the world of credit cards. Some other students might have previously used supplementary credit cards linked to their father’s credit card account; however, for such students too, their student credit card is the first one that is truly theirs.

Student credit cards are not very different from other types of credit cards in the basic sense; they function in the same way as any credit card would. However, there are some differences, which basically arise from the fact that student credit cards are used by people who have no prior experience with credit cards and who perhaps don’t completely understand the concept of credit cards. Hence, the credit card supplier is at risk with issuing credit cards (student credit cards) to such people whom he is not sure about. Most of the students don’t have a credit history either. In such a case, the supplier of student credit card cannot be sure of receiving the credit card bill payments in time (and even receiving them at all). To counter such risks, the supplier of student credit card requires the parent of the student to co-sign the student credit card application form as a guarantee. Moreover, the credit limit on student credit cards is generally around a $500.00 to a $1,000.00 credit limit. This limit is of course lower than what it is for other credit cards (this credit limit is generally sufficient to fulfil the typical needs of a student). Another risk management instrument used by the student credit card suppliers is the interest rate or APR. The APR on student credit cards is generally higher than that for other credit cards. Again, this is done to dissuade the students from overspending on their student credit card.

We acknowledge the fact that credit card debt is never a good thing. However, we also acknowledge that having a student credit card is one key tool in developing the overall fiscal responsibility in a young Aussie’s life and in today’s economy, that can only help.
